When we lived in Monterey, California I had a friend who enjoyed bargain hunting as much as I did. One of our adventures led us to a small shop in Santa Cruz, California. There we found two identical benches. The woman who ran the shop said the benches were from an expo in San Francisco and that a woman had bought a bunch of them to use for her daughter’s outside wedding. When the seat is flipped up it does say Exposition Auditorium.
San Francisco had two big expos — the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (also called the World’s Fair) and the Golden Gate International Exposition 1939-1940. I’m not sure if the bench is from one of those two events or not. No matter, I love it. The back is one long piece of wood that’s been curved.
And it also folds flat against the wall. It’s very comfortable to sit on and has become one of our favorite pieces.
The bench looks like it belongs on the beach. Pretty amazing purchase!
People have also thought it might have been on a ship!
Maybe an old movie house. I usher at an old Opera House and I’ve seen some , not in use, in the lobby to show old pieces from the opera house.
That is an excellent possibility!
What a fab find! Great extra seating when you have a crowd, and looks good even when you don’t! I could envision this in a wide entry hall.
It is great extra seating — it’s been in a number of different rooms as we’ve moved from place to place.
